d) Female directors in the Selection process

For the first time after signing the SWAN Pledge for parity and diversity, the Festival has methodically counted the female directors submitting their film for the Selection, as well as the female directors selected in the main competitions, with the results as below:

- 27% of the directors submitting a feature film to be part of the Locarno selection were women

- 37% of the directors submitting a short film to be part of the Locarno selection were women

(total number of directors include Female, Male, Non determined and Other gender)

e) Selected female directors

- 35% of the directors with a feature film selected to be part of the Locarno selection were women

- 31% of the directors with a short film selected to be part of the Locarno selection were women

(total number of directors include Female, Male, Non determined and Other gender)

Female directors are part of the 2019 Official Selection with :

  • 6 in Concorso Internazionale

  • 6 in Piazza Grande (Piazza Grande + Crazy Midnight)

  • 8 in Cineasti del Presente

  • 4 in Fuori Concorso

  • 4 in Moving Ahead

  • 12 in the Pardi di Domani :  International Competition

  • 5 in the Pardi di Domani : National Competition

The Concorso Internazionale is gathering 6 female directors and 13 male directors, with 17 films (there are codirections!), hence 32 % of women directors total.

Total: 45 female directors (26 for the feature films and 19 for the shorts film) and 92 male directors (49 feature directors and 43 short films directors).

The method of calculation considers the total number of female directors of the film and not the gender of the film. The data collection methodology is not yet finalized, the parties involved (Locarno Film Festival and SWAN) are discussing which method of calculation would be more accurate for the next years.
